  • Counselor (Children under 8)

    Hope

Each year, we hire 2 to 3 people (Special Counselors) to provide childcare for staff children (Morale Boosters) who are too young to join the camper group.  These young children belong to those who teach or are a part of our leadership team. While they are doing the job for which they were hired, our special counselors are playing with and caring for their children.  Knowing their child is in capable hands makes it possible for them to concentrate and perform their job to the best of their ability. Special Counselors often become ‘part of the family’ for the parents with whom they are working and will stay connected after the summer ends.

This person will need to have:

    • A love of young children
    • An intuitive sense of each child and their needs
    • Patience
    • Attention to detail
    • Fun-loving nature
    • Strong communication skills

This job is an incredibly important position in our organization and includes the following responsibilities:

    • Full-time care of staff children while parents are teaching in an activity

    • Communicating with the parents to inform them of highlights and challenges that occur while in your care
    • Working with parents to gain an understanding of their parenting style
    • Working with parents to gain an understanding of their child(ren)
      • What works best in guiding them
      • How to discipline or redirect their child
      • How best to care for their child in an effective manner
      • Communicating with parents about setting boundaries with their child
    • Collaborating and communicating with the other Special Counselor(s)
    • Escorting the children to activities as is appropriate, depending on their age
      • While some Morale Boosters may be age-appropriate for activities, they should not be left in the care of the teaching staff. It will be the responsibility of the Special Counselor to oversee the Morale Booster(s)
      • Communication with the Department Heads to ascertain when it will be appropriate to have the Morale Boosters visit their activity
    • Creating a schedule based on the ALC activity schedule that works for the Morale Boosters
    • Creating activities that are away from the camper group when it is necessary to give these young ones time away in a quiet space
